Kootenay Pass & Banff

Aug 7/2014  warm day 88, cool at night 64
Just up the way at Radium Hot Springs there is Hwy 93 that will take us through Kootenay National Park and come out at Castle Mountain and the Bow Valley Parkway (1a) just a couple miles from Banff.
entering the Kootenay Pass at Radium Hot Springs

When entering the pass we paid for the daily park pass, thinking we needed it.   Don't buy one unless you are camping or hiking or fishing in the park for the day.   Oh well we think of it as our donation for using such a nice ride!  It is a truck route so expect a higher speed than you would like.  It would be perfect 10 to 15 miles lower, and just a scenic byway.  I can't help taking more pictures on these rides stunned by the beauty of the mountains.

On Bow Valley Parkway we saw a crowd of cars stopped - that means Wildlife!  What will we see today?   Ahhhhhh,, a pair of Elk.   Wow the rack on them is as big as their body.

Elk in Bow Valley, actually called Elk Meadows
On to Banff, and we expect some crowds even though it is summer the tourists flock to this huge skiing village.  Banff was Canada's first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  We think the best way to see Banff might be from the sky or the Gondola.   The parking lot was full and buses too, however we got our tickets and the line moved very quickly.
Gondola in Banff
Before long we were boarding the Gondola to ride to the top.  It is well worth the $'s and the wait.  Spectacular view.
