LBJ Ranch

Jan 30/16  It was such a nice day we decided to go 15 miles up the road to LBJ's Ranch National Historic site after we left Luckenbach.   From one life extreme to the other,  you might say.  Cowboys to Presidents.

Lyndon Baines Johnson became President in 1963 after President Kennedy was assassinated.  Johnson’s time in office came during a huge period of societal change in American society, marked by the Civil Rights revolution and the Vietnam War.  The Johnson family were cattle drovers and they had been in the Stonewall Texas area for generations.   Unfortunately Johnson’s father had financial problems and the future President grew up under difficult circumstances. His sympathy for the less fortunate became a factor when as President he had a chance to affect social policy laws. In addition to pursuing the Vietnam War, President Johnson pressed on with an expansive slate of programs labeled as the Great Society that included three landmark Civil Rights bills and Medicare.  Long before he was President;  LBJ met his soon to be wife on a blind date, and asked him to marry him that date!  They did marry 10 weeks later, he was known to be quite persistent.  Comically they said he knew two languages, English and Profanity.  LBJ was born on the ranch, raised there, schooled there, died there and was buried in the family plot.  During his time as President he spent 1/4 of the time working from the Ranch.   It became known as the Texas White House.   Today about 600 acres of the 2600 acre Johnson property has been set aside as a working ranch and historic landmark which is open to the public.  It's well preserved and gives you an eye opener to a era of of his presidency.
