Thunder, Thunder, Thunder

March 24/2018 Weather 86, night 60.   A hot day with hot bikes!

Friday, Saturday, Sunday is Thunder in the Hills weekend; a motorcycle rally in Hill Country.   We hooked up with Dave and Bev from the park and took a ride on old Medina highway and then turned onto one of the "twisted sisters/337" to the tiny town of Leakey.   There is not much in Leakey but even on a quiet Saturday afternoon there are usually at least 20 to 30 bikes at the Bent Rim Bar and Grill.  So wonder how many are there today???

What a pretty ride it was; through the low hills and rocky cream coloured  outcroppings.  Bike, after bike after bike purring by.  During the day the motorcycles were making good use of the warm day and curvy roads.
Well it appears we will not be getting a burger and beer at the Bent Rim today,,, but lots of eye candy for the guys.  No - not the girls, CHROME !  Well maybe a couple of girls.  Haha.

It's funny how we always get to this bar/grill in Leakey and have never stopped anywhere else.  Today being so busy forced us to find some food somewhere.  There are just a few places and we stopped at Mama Chole's restaurant which was super delicious home cooked Mexican.  My guacamole jalapeno cheeseburger was yummy.  So good things happen when you change up your routine.

We made a loop back to Kerrville, heading north and then east along the Guadalupe river.   The water crisscrosses the road every few miles and it is like blue turquoise.    As you get closer to the village of Hunt (yup everyone here hunts, like animals)  there is a ranch with wooden fence posts and each has an old cowboy boot.   Dave was so pissed off with his cowboy boots the other day; as in they were killing his feet he drove out here and put his boots on the posts.  He thought they could finish out their miserable life out here upside down!!!  Hilarious.  As we drove by Bev pointed out the boots.  Oh my gosh, what a laugh.  You know some look pretty good, hey maybe we should stop and get Billy a used pair?

March 27/17  Weather has been perfect for riding.  Hovering around 80 everyday and 55 +  at night.  We have been out riding everyday.  Those wheels are turning!  Seems most days the guys say "Where are we eating today?"

 So here is the list of small towns in the last week - Luckenbach, Welfare, Waring,  Bandera, Comfort, Boerne, Leakey, Hunt, Ingram and right here in Kerrville.    Now the name Welfare for a town, just has to peak your curiousity????

Some of the days have been almost 200 miles and other days only 50 miles.  This 'Hill Country' area is just a great area for exploring.  Motorcycles, Antique Hunters, Jewellery, Cowboy stuff, Thrift shops, Foodies, Hand Crafts, Wild Exotic Animals, Hunting, Spring Wildflowers, Wineries,,,,,,,   the list goes on and on.  If you have an interest you will likely find it here.

March 10 & 14/17  Weather high 70's, nights 50's.  The mornings have been starting out with clouds and breaking into sun.   Most of the riders are leaving around 10:30 which makes it a couple hours ride to lunch and a few hours back.  We are getting some miles on those tires!

Named the best motorcycle ride in Texas is "The Twisted Sisters".  We rode The Twisted Sisters on 2  different days.  Up and down and back and forth; elevation is not over 2000 feet.  The sweeping hills are so great for riding, not that challenging we find (we have been on so many motorcycle rides now!!!) but we can really enjoy and take in the views.   Hwys 337, 336, 335.  A couple hundred miles will make the loop from the RV Park.

In the little towns of Leakey and Camp Wood you will find hole in the wall places offering burgers and beer.  One of the fellows we ride with says "we ride to eat".  Ha ha, that's right.

Camp Wood Biker Bar

Camp Wood has some military history.  Once a camp for the Civil War, it was at first held by the Union Soldiers then quickly taken over by the Confederates.  After the Civil War the Texas Rangers used it to protect the settlers coming West from Indian Attacks.  The town has seen better days, it's population is 706.  Many of the buildings seem to be a ghost of the past.

Jan 29/16  Riding out with the group from our park, they were anxious to show us some of their favorite rides in the area.

We did the Hunt Loop that takes you winding along the Guadalupe river and along miles of ranch land that has more deer than we have seen anywhere before.

Stonehenge II in Hunt

A couple of friends made an art project that is a replica of Stonehenge.  Most of the stones are constructed of plaster applied to a wire mesh frame however, two of the central stones are real.   Size wise it's about 90% wide and 60% high as the real thing.  Can you walk through these stones Clare?  Would you end up with an old Cowboy instead of Jamie the Highlander?

RR335, RR336, RR337  The Three Twisted Sisters in Hill Country.  The ride is out into the country side with jagged edged rocky outcrops and some curves.   Up and downs and winding trails make an enjoyable ride.
