entering the Valley Station |
Everyone we have talked to since we entered the California state border last fall said we should really take the Palm Springs Tram ride. You head up from the Palm Springs Visitor Center to the gate entrance and Valley station; the road is quite twisting and climbing; not sure you would want to come up in a motorhome just an fyi... we took the motorcycle and it was great. At this point you are at 2,613 feet above sea level.

going over the tower station |
The Tram is a 10 minute, 2 1/2 mile ride through the Chino Canyon to Mountain station at 8,516 feet. When you disembark you can see a movie about the Tram, visit the restaurant or gift shops or continue to hike up to the top of Mount San Jacinto at 10,834 feet. No hiking for Bill and Rosey; the tram was the thrill for us. The views are beautiful but could have been better on a clearer day, they were a bit hazy.

So back to telling you about the tram ride; it is the largest tram car in the world. It can hold up to 80 passengers, it is 18 feet in diameter and 8 feet high. The cabin floor rotates twice per trip; thus we were going up and going around and when you went over the cable towers (4 of them) the car was swinging! It's quite the ride. It really is an engineering sensation.
