Coach TLC

Oct 30/31  2018    Weather too warm for the end of Oct - 80 high, 67 low.  Thunderstorm coming in for Wednesday.  Happy Halloween will be a wet one in Central Arkansas.
RV Fog Dr
We came in to setup for work on our windows.  Coach needs a little TLC.   Three of them have begun to fog up and weep inside the dual panes.  Billy was on line with the Monaco forum group and the RV Fog Doctor in Searcy was recommended as a good shop to have it fixed while we stay in our coach.  The process is that they pull the window out of the coach, cut the seal holding the dual panes together, clean them and then rebake a seal back onto the window at 400 degrees.  There you have it.  Then reinstall the window back into the coach and seal the exterior.  It is hard to find experienced shops to do this.  You can stay overnight with power and water hookups if need be, which is very handy.

Hidden Gems: Arkansas State Parks

Oct 28/29 2018  Weather is absolutely stunning.  Warm sunny fall days.  72 and 75 low of 48.  Gorgeous.  Hope we don't pay for this beautiful weather in the days to come.....?
American BeautyBerry or French Mulberry Bush
We are slowly moving towards Searcy and for a couple days we stopped about a hour inside the east Arkansas border.   There are some really nice State Parks in Arkansas and we are lucky to find one here near Wynne called Village Creek State Park.
long paved pull thru in loop B
It is a winding road to the park ~ Crowleys Ridge Scenic Parkway ~ and then more winding roads into the camping area but so worth the drive.  There are several large paved pull thrus with full hookups.  No or little cell service or TV reception.... but its so peaceful to be off the grid for a couple of days.   It was so quiet at night and dark!  We both read a book in the two days.  Funny, everytime we picked up our phone or tablet we were "oh yeah, no service".  Withdrawals; but in a good way.    The leaves are in full colour now and absolutely stunning.  Our site was nestled into the woods.  Every night the deer came out to graze and say "hello neighbour"!  The park has nature trails, hiking trails, a camp area just for equestrian (outdoor stalls and water and a ring for horses), a golf course and ranger/visitor centre.
Billy riding through Village Creek State Park
The geological formation of this area is 150 million years old. The ridge is composed of glacial sediment known as loess (which is wind blown dust).
crowley's ridge
Oddly it contrasts with the flat table of land around the Mississippi delta which is rich black soil.  The ridge is a half a mile to 12 miles wide in spots and rises to 550 feet elevation in a 150 mile embayment.   We are enjoying the fall day and riding the backroads near the parkway.  We always have our GPS set on Home to find our way back!

Between Nashville and Memphis

Oct 26/27 2018  Weather on Friday is mild rain showers.  We cannot avoid the rain on Friday and there is little wind so we are moving on a few hundred miles across Tennessee.  No point in staying in Nashville, it is going to rain so we can't ride.  No point in going to Memphis for the same reason.  Both are higher priced camping and noisy due to the urban centers so we are opting to stay in a small rv park half way between the two.  Never stopped here before but the reviews are positive.
these guys came following me when I was walking around the park
For the next two nights we will try Parkers Crossroads RV Park.

As it turns out the park is small and quiet with a handfull of nice level concrete pull thrus.  We have a down day to do a bit of odd jobs, maybe a little cleaning or not!
very easy in and out

Saturday the 27th turned out to be nice and sunny, high of 68 low of 47.  Great day  to putz around.  We are moving slowly along as we have an appointment in Searcy, Arkansas on Wednesday Oct 31.  No hurry to get there; and of course we are never in a hurry anyways!

Shaker Colony

Well known Shaker ladder back chair hanging upside down on the peg wall with the broom

Central Building - 40 rooms, dorm style bedrooms, kitchen, common rooms
Oct 25/18  Weather was grey and cool today but dry until late afternoon, 59/48.  We asked to stay an extra night so we good take advantage of the day and ride out 12 miles to a unique village that was here from 1807 till 1922; South Union Shaker Village.   It took up 6,000 acres and had over 200 buildings with a peak of 350 persons.  After the Civil War it never recovered from the loss of food supplies, the Village fed over 50,000 soldeirs as they were totally bipartisian in the war.
Back to the question of what are Shakers?  The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, more commonly known as the Shakers, were a Christian sect founded in the 18th century in England. They were initially known as "Shaking Quakers" because of their ecstatic behavior during worship services.

every room has the peg rail to hang hat, clothes, chair, brooms
Shaker Villages practiced a celebate communal living, where all property was shared with equal opportunity for women and men and no regard to colour of skin. They didn’t believe in procreation, and therefore had to adopt children and recruit converts into their community. For those that were adopted, they were given a choice to either stay within the community or leave when they turned 21. It was a safe haven for many. In that time remember women and children were considered a man's property but here they were equal.
Dorm style bedroom
With much hard work, each person had to do their share; they experienced a higher quality of living in those days than many others. A child or adult would have 3 hot meals a day, a clean environment, heat and running water in buildings, others to help care or the children, an infirmy, no abuse, schooling and responsibility to the community. Like the Quakers, the Shakers were pacifists who had advanced notions of gender and racial equality. The colony also believed in opportunities for intellectual and artistic development within the Society. Simplicity in dress, speech, and manner were encouraged, as was living in rural colonies away from the corrupting influences of the cities. Like other Utopian societies
founded in the18th and19th centuries, the Shakers believed it was possible to form a more perfect society upon earth. All outsiders were considered from the World. A Shaker never visited beyond the Village and the outsiders were not welcomed into the Shakers buildings and property. There was however a common place for a Shaker to meet with family upon request. They were not held against their will.
Garden Seeds sold at South Union
Shakers were well known for their handmade furniture especially the ladder back chair, wall pegs, the flat broom, the clothespin, the circular saw and more items that made their life efficient. South Union was the farthest south and west colony. This Museum has a large amount of authentic Shaker furniture and made most of their money by growing, harvesting and selling garden seeds. The furniture guidelines are simple, utilitarian and require a purpose. The Village was totally self sufficient. In time the 350 members dropped to 50 after the Civil War and eventually in the 1920's they were unable to continue existance as their population dwindled to under 10. Currently in the USA their are 2 practicing Shakers alive, both in Maine. We spent 3 hours walking back in time here and were impressed with the artifacts and preservation of the Museum. While in Bowling Green take the time to see this history in American Life. Interesting tidbit.....We did not have Shaker Villages in Canada! The settlements started in the New England area and progressed south and west to this farthest colony.

Duncan Hines Scenic Byway

afternoon of Oct 24/18  ~ while we were at the Corvette Museum we stopped at the Kentucky Visitors counter and the fellow gave us a tip on finding the Smokey Pig BBQ joint for lunch.  Before we could find the place we could see and smell the smoke from the wood coals outside!
Smokey Pig BBQ
After a plate of brisket, beans and potato salad we were good to go on a ride while the sun was shining.  We were armed with a scenic route map and directions for the 80 mile Duncan Hines Byway.   I will warn you there are about 21 turns along the way so pay attention! haha
near Nolin River Lake Dam
The fall leaves are turning here and the paved winding roads took us to Mammoth Cave National Park and then looped back to Bowling Green.  We did have one tricky area where we kept dropping down and down a winding forested area for five miles to the Green River. Billy wondered what was going to happen when we reached the water.  Several times the signs warned "Road Ends In Water".  What?

I was pretty sure there was some kind of ferry across(said the brochure) but who knew what we would find.... and you cannot see it till you drop right down the road to the edge.  Ok.  Phew.  It was fun and there was a short cable ferry across!
Green River Ferry
The drive continued through the park grounds, beautiful sweeping roads.  Sometimes we were on lofty ridges and then down into deep valleys.  Wooded lands and weathered stone outcroppings.  Old rustic barns and a series of country lanes edged with field stone fences.  The ride ended back in Bowling Green about 3 hours later and we were exhilarated with the beauty of the area.  Backroad riding here is incredible as every road is paved.  We will have to come back to this area and do some more exploring someday:)

Get your Vette on!

Oct 24/2018  Weather sunny, cool high of 62, low of 43.    We leathered up on the Harley and rode over to the Corvette Museum.
National Corvette Museum

Corvette owners have preferred parking
The factory is right next door and you can tour it too except that it is currently being retooled for the 2019 model and will not be open for visitor till sometime in 2019.  Ok... next time we must do that.
Rosey is loving this 2015 Stingray

Right from the front door of the museum you can see it's all about the Corvette enthusiast; they have special parking!  Neat.  There will be about 80 different  Vettes in period settings, mint classics, racing models and the ones that went down the sink hole in 2014!!!  And you can try a 2015 Stingray on for size!

This one went down the sinkhole:(

Bare Footin'

October 23/2018  Weather sunny and warming up, high of 72 when we arrived in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
KOA Bowling Green, they all look the same

We backtracked to I75 then took the bypass on the east side of Cincinnati,,,,, I know you wonder why do we do that?  It is about 20 miles longer but so much easier than trucking right down through Cinci.  We have always found downtown is rough and often under construction and the lanes feel so narrow.  So we take I275E.    Back on 75S we cut west on I71 to Louisville where we again take the first bypass I265E and drop on to I65S.  Now it is just an hour and a half to Bowling Green KOA, Kentucky.  Our stop will be the KOA for a couple of nights.
Billy barefootin'

While cruising along today I smiled while noting that Billy is always barefootin'.   This is his preferred mode of driving.  He has a pair of old shoes that he puts on when we stop for fuel at the truck stops.  As well he puts on a pair of leather fueling gloves.  In the motor home we have a hidden compartment under the steps to the outside and it's the perfect spot to keep his fueling gear.

It's that Time

October 22/2018  Weather ~ time to head south weather... we had frost in Southwestern Ontario 3 times last week and most days are grey, windy and high 40's which is cold for us.  Today was a sunny day, high of 62 in Dayton, Ohio with a clear night and low of 37.
Good travel day.    Toledo is still messy with construction so we were advised to take I94 to 23 to 475 to I75 to avoid it.  Driving was great, maybe a bit longer but no construction zones.    We were wondering about the border crossing too, which turned out to be a breeze.  Nicest officer we have ever met.  So there you go.
Our friends told us that Dayton had a nice KOA and we thought maybe we would actually drive farther than our normal day ..... yes the 2:30 club or 230 mile club.  We went 292 miles and stopped at 3:30!!!
The Dayton KOA is a huge park, and a good stop for the first day back on the road south and west.

2 to Sleep

Oct 15/2018  Weather - we returned back to the farm on Oct 3 and it has been unseasonably warm for fall in Ontario and some days down right hot.  We had two days well into the 80's.  BUT now the season has changed back to normal and it is fallish, and cool and there is a frost warning tonight.  Catching up on our errands and list of things to do so we can vamoosh out of here soon.  Today we came across a picture we snapped while camping in Kitchener.  We met the nicest campers from Sarnia way and the one fellow had just the perfect sign out front of his 5th wheel.  Often we have said this quote to others; it seems to be a camping rule.  It really is so true.

6 for drinks
4 for dinner
and
2 to sleep

Cozy by the Fire

Oct 3/2018  Weather  The last week in Kitchener was very damp, rain about 4 of the 7 days, and chilly too.  Thank goodness we had the Jeep to run back and forth to see our Grandson.    On the nights leading up to waiting for grandson to make his appearance we often had our fire pit on at night.  It is new to us and we are thoroughly enjoying it.  Billy loves turning it on and off.  Get it?  On and off !  We can have a nice warm cozy sit for 45 minutes or 15 minutes or 3 hours.   No chopping wood.  No blowing smoke as the wood fire always finds everyone at some point in the night.  No dousing the flames to securely put it out.  We are loving it.  Yes it does not crackle and smell like a real wood fire but the convenience is pretty darn nice.
